Apple's #1 mistake was in licensing the Macintosh UI elements to 
Microsoft in 1985. The language in this agreement was overly broad, and 
it allowed Microsoft to freely copy any and all elements of the 
Macintosh user experience. Basically, they gave away their crown 
jewels.

I disagree with the conventional wisdom that Apple should have licensed 
clones of the Mac. Their #2 mistake was setting too high a price for 
the Mac, something they did not remedy until late 1990.
