For short cables 5 feet or less, it really does not matter to match the
cable to the scope input, or load the cable. You can just realize that the
50 ohm generator is only going to have rated voltages at a given setting
when operated into a 50 ohm load. Since the scope is higher, it will not
load the gen, and you will get higher voltage but that is OK. At audio
frequencies, the voltage a high input impedance VOM or DVM reads should be
similar to that on the scope when you do the conversion from peak to peak
volts on scope to RMS such as read on DVM AC volts scale. This is good from
at least 1 kHz and down, depending on specs of the DVM/ or VOM. For short
cables there will not be reflections as you see in RF use with a transmitter
and antenna.
