In Outlook Express, you can select

 "View->Current View->Group messages by conversation"

to get essentially that feature.  I assume other email clients have a
similar capability.

You can also use

  "Tools->Message Rules"

to sort your email into various folders.  I have multiple folders for some
reflectors that have a lot of traffic. For example, on QRP-L, I have folders
for contests, fox, conventions, buy/sell, and Elmer 160.
