Subject: [Elecraft] K2 QRO or Not?

Hello Folks,

I have not written much lately but I felt this question should be answered be
all who have opinions.

I do use my K2 as my primary rig. It is the only HF rig other than a couple of
Small Wonder cw rigs that is in operating order at the time. My rig is a basic
rig with the SSB option without 100 w ability as yet. I do have the KAT100 Tuner
also. I do get about 15 watts out on 75 meters and that seems to be adequate
from here (Stamford, CT, near NYC) to get up into Canada. I am on almost every
night on 75 meters talking to friends that are in northern NH right near the
Canada border. There have been times when the band is good and I can dial down
the power all the way which gives me only about half a watt and I still get up
there Q5. One of the guys records me and plays the recordings back (interesting
fun.) About the only time they have trouble copying me is when other
inconsiderate hams start transmitting with the kwatt of power about 1 kc above
or below us or when the band is totally dead. I also use 4o meters during the
day to talk to then about once a week. The rig is fine for SSB even without the
100 watts output if the band is not full of the inconsiderate hams. It is
amazing how many amateurs there are that just come on the air and start
transmitting without making sure the frequency is clear. One of the guys I talk
with has a kwatt amp and even when he fires that thing up he cannot chase these
fools away.

So, John, my recommendation would be to put in the SSB option first, it is a
small rather inexpensive upgrade, and then work on the 100 watt upgrade while
enjoying the SSB mode. I have also worked a share of SSB DX and many contacts on
the west coast with the higher bands.
