[Elecraft] Inventory of Parts, a Fussbudget's Story

Gosh, this has been such an interesting topic, I decided to weigh in myself....

Since I had not put together a kit in 20 or more years (last one was a Heathkit HW100),
I was pretty carefull about the inventory of parts. I purchased enough Ice Cube Trays from the Dollar General store at a dollar for three to inventory and sort each bag of parts. I also oriented the trays a certain way and then created a quick lookup map on paper as to where the parts were...all the 103, 104, and 102 caps for instance. So, I knew by looking at my cheat sheet what tray the parts were in...and what compartment. I did not do that for the resistors in the roll since they came out in order of use. Loose resistors I did compartmentalize. (Is this being really anal about this? I think so!)

I then read the manual twice. I then took a third sweep through the manual looking for parts that were not usual in my experience (I am not an electronics technician). I paid a lot of attention to toroid cores since I had not dealt with those before.

I then took the plunge and started. I am glad I was so detailed in doing the inventory and sorting because I knew what parts I was missing (none). I could also gauge how far along I was because of the emply ice cube trays stacking up on the floor. Also, I was familiar with the parts and I could anticipate what was going to be next.

Some of the draw backs of my method is having enough space to store all the trays when they are loaded, the compartments can be a bit small for some parts, and now I have a dozen ice cube trays floating around the shack that my wife doesn't want or need and I am not using.

Just some radom thoughts of the universe..of which I am a part of.
