Hi Graham,
I've been a linuxer since about '95 or '96.  Haven't done a lot with 
linux and ham radio yet, been occupied with other things, but I intend 
to rectify that.

What distribution did you install?  Debian and SuSE have a number of ham 
radio related packages.  I think Slackware does.  I imagine Redhat does 
too.

John has already mentioned marote, I recommend it too.  The same guy has 
a command line version called tuna something.  Here are some others you
