George, you could do that because you were not a "6". By the time I became
eligible for one, all the 1X2 calls for the "6" zone were in use. So, when
they announced the 2X1 calls, I jumped on it fast. AC6Y was the 77th 2X1
call issued in California.
My apologies if you thought I was calling them "vanity calls", that's not
what I meant. Back then, they were a sign of an Extra class licensee,
nothing more, just like the 2X1 calls.
I was prepared to pay for a "vanity call" when I came to Oregon and asked
for a "7" zone call, but decided that I liked AC7AC. That was simply the
next call "in line" that the FCC computer assigned to me.

Ron, back in the 70's you got a 1x2 callsign of the FCC's choice upon
payment of $25, having an Extra and having been licensed for 25 years or
more. I was fortunate to get a previously unassigned callsign, although 5YR
had been issued in the 20's (prior to the FCC) as a commercial station
license. Such calls are not classified as vanity calls since no preference
was made. Rather, it was just an FCC callsign re-issue.
