The only difference between one ground radial and many ground radials is
the radiation efficiency of the vartical antenna. With only one radial,
there will be a slight skewing of the directional pattern of about 1 dB,
favoring the direction of the radial itself, certainly not "serious
distortion".

As far as angle of radiation is concerned, the take-off angle is
determined by the far-field soil conductivity in the area. A vertical
antenna's ground radials have absolutely no effect (unless they are
several wavelengths long and many!) on the angle of radiation from the
antenna.
