GM (good morning)

RST shouldn't be in contest exchanges because it is almost always =
meaningless. If it isn't meaningless, then its a pain. For beginners, =
here is why:

"I don't think sending an itty bitty RST is going to break the =
proverbial back" Daniel/AA0NI

Oiy. It isn't sending it that is a problem. It is recording what you =
have sent in the correct computer field for it. Why? =20

You call CQ. You get an answer. You type that station's call sign into =
the call sign field of the computer logging program. The computer =
automatically goes to the exchange received field, and now you must =
SEND. No chance to move cursor to the RST sent field and change it, =
you're sending.

You could use the computer to send automatically, or you could use your =
memory keyer to send, but no, you have to send by hand because a real =
RST is expected, not something programmed. You're a sport and you =
decide to do that, so you send by hand and send a real RST. Now what =
happens?

You finish sending. You have sent 559 and need to record it in the =
right field, but you can't right now. You need to type in the exchange =
being received. You get it typed in and you would like to record the =
RST sent, but you can't because...

Now you must say, "thanks, QRZ?" to send this automatically with the =
computer, you have hit enter and logged the contact without putting in =
the RST you sent, so you are sending by hand to retain the opportunity =
ot log it which means you can't move the cursor to the RST sent field =
and change it.

If you don't get an answer, you would like to call CQ. You can't do it =
with the computer because you have delayed pushing enter to make the RST =
entry, and you would like to record that 559, but you can't because you =
are sending the CQ by hand waiting for a chance to record the 559.

Or if you DO get an answer to the QRZ, you need to punch enter on the =
computer and go to the next QSO to type in the call sign so you never =
did get a chance to record that 559.

Therefore, you don't send the 559. You give up, and return to sending =
the canned 5NN.

If you are working one station every five minutes and logging on paper =
then RST seems like a good idea to you.

Let's send state instead of RST. thanks.

Because you do the RST that is sent WHILE you are sending, not while you =
are logging. When you are not sending, you can't do it because you are =
copying the other guy's sending. When you finish copying the other guy =
you can't log it because you are sending thanks, QRZ?
