Quite true, although we often kid ourselves into thinking otherwise. I
would like to think my superior operating skills had something to do
with working D4B in Cape Verde on the first call at the very beginning
of the recent ARRL DX contest, but it was more likely dumb luck on my
part and good ears on the other side, along with the fact that he
hadn't been on long enough to generate a pileup.

The possible exception is working a station with a sizeable pileup
where selection of frequency and timing of the call come into play,
which still requires skilled operating by the other station.
