Another (surprising) thing that can cause this is taking the small board 
with the SM parts out of the DSP unit, and leaving the other board of 
the DSP in place.  You can press MENU once, and after that some (but not 
all, I think) buttons will be disabled.  Of course, most people are 
smart enough to notice something as large as this board lying around 
after they have reassembled their K2.
