I found the answer to the question I posed earlier and give it below 
in case any other owners have the same problem.

The output lead from my keyer has a quarter inch jack plug on it and 
so I use an adapter for the key socket on the K2.  I had 
inadvertently used a mono adapter (instead of a stereo one) and this 
caused the MENU not to be enabled when I pressed the menu button.  In 
fact, with just the mono adapter inserted in the key socket causes 
the menu not to be displayed.

As a matter of interest, does anybody know why this happens?
