Hi, Ted.  Had the same problem.  I ended up flopping U-1 upside-down =
(with the cut-lead input still pointing toward the center of the board). =
 And it worked.

Queried Gary about this and he said it shouldn't matter as both of the =
90deg leads that go to the top and bottom of the board are grounds.  My =
printing on the device is now down:

Try flopping it with the cut lead to the center of the board and yes, =
just solder to the pads, not the holes.
