John,

I need to ask - have you done a good alignment using a visual display such
as Spectrogram?  If you have not, I suggest you do so.  Your problems sound
like typical misalignment of the filter/BFO relationship.

calibration - Step 3 for information on how to set the filter/BFO
relationships.

I am not certain where your 'VOX hum' is coming from unless the BFO setting
is letting too much low frequency energy through the filter.  The only other
thing that occurs to me is that your mic cable shield is not properly
grounded.  You might try grounding the mic connector on the front panel
board.
