Steve and all,
A quick check of a transistor (not FET) with a diode meter (or current based
ohmmeter) is quite easy.
1) put one lead on the base - then touch the other lead to the collector and
then to the emitter - both should either conduct or not conduct (both should
do the same thing).
2) reverse the meter leads and repeat - if the collector and emitter showed
conduction in the prior step, they should not conduct this time, etc.
Keep in mind that power transistors may show some reverse current when doing
this kind of test, so if you find that there is some (much higher)
resistance when the junctions are reversed biased - how much depends on the
transistor type.
