There are a number of house brands of portable analog scopes in the $395 to
495 range that are suited to ham uses. One is Protek, and then there are
the long time US TV trade instruments from B&K and Sencore.
A great scope for hams if you find it at swaps is the Philips line vended by
Fluke in USA, and made by one of Europe's oldest and biggest electronic
instrument companies Philips of Holland. They sell in the 3217 model, a 50
MHz scope for $125 or less at ham swaps. Most hams have only heard of HP
or Tektronix scopes and so miss out on an equally accurate and good scope.
Our research lab still has 7 of them from 1981 and they work fine. Other
Philips models good for hams are 3244 (4 channels at a time!) 3245, 3260,
any of the 32xx models line. They are discrete components pre surface
mount. Some have delayed sweep and two channels or more so you can trigger
and look at the beginning of a string of waves and then delay to see later
in the series like if there is a missing pulse. Very handy for
troubleshooting digital or analog equipment. Some go above 100 MHz real
time. A ham can get by with a 15 MHz scope for most shack uses, but higher
bandwidth is always better.
