Hi
Any alternating magnetic field will act as a demagnetizer. I use an old =
Radio Shack bulk tape eraser. I don't know it these are still around. I =
have also used a Weller soldering gun. I even used an old power supply =
choke with the I section removed from the core.=20
The technique is to place the tool next to the tape eraser or next to =
the side of the soldering gun and turn it on then slowly move the tool =
away from the eraser or gun. Do not turn the eraser or gun off until the =
tool is at least 2 feet away from the eraser or gun.=20
You can make a demagnetizer by removing the I section from a large power =
supply choke or even a transformer. This will have the coil and the =
three exposed ends of the E section of the core. Connect it to a power =
cord through a push button switch. Plug it into 120 volts 60 Hz and use =
it as above. Do not turn it on for more than a few seconds at a time.
I have also seen a tool demagnetizer in Northern Tool and /or Harbor =
Freight catalogs but I have never used one of these

Subject: [Elecraft] Demagnetizing Tools?
Well, I'm increasingly annoyed by my flush cutting wire clippers which =
appeared to have acquired a bit of magnetization. The short pieces of =
component leads clipped off, often cling to the tips of the cutters,=20
requiring much prodding with the finger to get them to drop off. =
Then,=20
there is the occasional clipping that finally drops -- but into the =
guts=20
of the radio I'm working on, followed by a long hunt looking for the=20
wayward clip, wondering what it will short.......!@#$@?>??@?
Is there an easy way to demagnetize tools? How?

Steve
