Hello all
Well, I stuck components into the RF board, I soldered (and
inhaled considerable amounts of rosin smoke), I re-soldered and
cussed a lot. I adjusted lights and spectacles, I used
magnifiers; I did all the things that I think all of you who
have built these kits may have done; and what the heck, I got
somewhere.
Where I got was to a place where i could here signals on 40
meters, abeit weak, and disappointingly, none on 20 meters. So
tonight, with magnifier, soldering iron, and schematics, I
attacked the problems. A few bad solder joint repairs later, I
got 20 meters online and got more sensitivity on 40. Couldn't
hear the foxes tonight, but I think that will improve when I put
my dipole back up.
As to receive performance, I have little to compare it to except
the following:
A Heathkit gr-78(?) that I had in the 70's
A Halli sx 28 also in the 70's
A HW-16 about '78
A Yaesu FRG-8800 Now
My Beloved TS-520
OK, it compares favorably with all of them, although I must say
that I seem to remember that the HW-16, with its tube circuits
was pretty good. (I like toobs!)
Anyway, I'm looking forward to finishing up here and getting the
xmit section on the air, maybe before the weekend. May I say:
"This stuff is really cool..."
Just put another twenty bucks in the K2 fund jar...
