Hi
OK I will take a stab at this. There are several types of audio =
generators. One is the basic sine wave generator. This generator will =
output a clean sine wave at audio frequencies. Audio is is usually =
loosely defined as 20 Hz to 20 KHz. Most audio generators will exceed =
this range. The one I have will output 5 Hz - 600 KHz. This generator is =
used to test audio amplifiers, audio filters or anywhere you need a very =
clean audio sine wave. You can also use it as a signal source to drive =
the input of a transmitter for a modulation source.
Another type of audio generator is a function generator. This generator =
can output square waves, triangle waves, sine waves and pulses although =
their pulse capability is limited. They have frequency ranges well below =
and above the audio range. Some covering a fraction of a hertz to many =
megahertz. Their sine wave is usually not as good as a true sine wave =
generator with maybe 1% or so distortion.
Another type is the audio sweep generator. This generator can sweep from =
a low to a high frequency and can be used to plot the response curves on =
amplifiers speakers, microphones and transducers. Most function =
generators can be operated as sweep generators.
The sweep generator you mentioned for TV is a special generator that =
only covers the IF frequency of a TV and was used to align the IF =
amplifiers in old TV sets. The newer TV made in the last 15-20 years use =
non adjustable SAW filters in the IF amps.=20
There are other special types of audio generators but for the =
experimenter/ham an inexpensive function generator is what I would get. =
New ones are a few hundred dollars up but you can find good used ones at =
hamfests and swap meets for under $100. Ask the seller to let you =
connect it to a scope and check all of the functions and frequency =
ranges before you buy it.=20

Subject: [Elecraft] another question from WT5Y
Whats an audio generator used for? Maybe some specific applications =
would help. Also a sweep function generator. I believe for only for =
TVs right?
