It very much surprises (and disappoints) me that this cost-free option
wasn't designed into the KX1 PCB.  I've never found any of the cheap (and
they are all cheap) stereo earbuds to work as well as a decent mono
headphone (or the no longer available Kenwood mono earbuds).  It was a real
pain to have the plug half pulled out from the panel until I cut the
necessary traces in my early K1 to disconnect the phone jack ring.  (That
wasn't as trivial as it sounds because no PCB trace diagrams are provide
with Elecraft rigs (anyone know why?) so it was hard to figure out where the
traces ran near the phone jack with the jack already soldered in place.)
