I wonder if anyone is giving consideration to a possible modification to
the KX1 to reduce the packing height and possibly improve the ruggedness
of the rig.
My thought would be to cut the control shafts down to about 3/16 inch so
that they protrude only about 3/16 above the panel.
A new low profile knob for the frequency encoder would also need to be
found or modified.
This lower profile unit would be less susceptible to damage from packing
and would reduce the packed volume slightly.
Of course care would need to be taken to avoid ruining the controls
during modification.
Relative to the "Dare I say" comments.
The KX1 is not a beginners first kit. I felt that my prior experience
kit building was very helpful in assembling this fine kit.
However, I agree that the semiconductor packaging did leave something to
be improved on.
I do appreciate a great effort to provide the maximum functionality in
the smallest space for hiking convenience.
This unit, bud headphones and some antenna wire provides a full HF cw
station.
I am looking for the 13.8 to 14 volt Li/?battery to provide a viable
replacement for the 6 AA cells and holder. I would then expect 4 watts
output instead of the present 2 for the self contained package.
Question to ELECRAFT? Is there any chance of upgrading the voltage spec
up to 14.5 or 15 volts. The quest for the Lithium rechargeable battery
would be simplified as most of those cell combinations seem to come in
just above 14 volts fully charged.
