Greetings all!
Some time ago, I posted a request for ideas on how to fix a stripped out =
battery holder screw. I received several replies which included the =
suggestions to use hot glue, epoxy, refasten with larger screws or even =
using longer screws from the case bottom secured by nuts in the battery =
holder.
Last night while doing some other work on the radio, I noticed that the =
stripped screw did not go into the case as far as the other three. The =
battery holder was obviously thicker at that mounting hole which did not =
allow the screw to bite into enough case to get a good hold.. At first, =
I considered using a drill to relieve enough plastic in the battery =
holder to give the screw enough bite. My concern was over drilling and =
having the screw threads come through the case enough to create a snag =
hazard. In a moment of blind faith, I instead inserted the screw into =
the holder, grabbed my Hakko soldering iron (at 700 degrees) and =
inserted the tip into the screw slot, turning it slowly for about 3-4 =
seconds until the plastic was nice and soft. I quickly traded iron for =
screw driver and was able to thread the screw into the hole until just =
flush with the case bottom. I now have a secure AND removable battery =
holder. Not a fix for the faint of heart, but I got lucky.
