This is known to happen if the K2 is too close to a power supply or if
the VCO voltage is too low. Also it could happen at or around 7185 kHz,
unless some decoupling measures have been taken (included in newer
K2's). I have never heard of any correlation with sidetone.

This command toggles the sidetone output on the control board between U8
pin 4 and U6 pin 25. New K2's (3000+) use U8-4 for sidetone, older ones
U6-25 unless they have the KIO2 or KPA100. U6-25 is then used for RS232
output.
