Jim and all,

A parallel dipole will work fine, but ...

The ends should be separated from the 40 meter dipole.  The more separation
the better.  Interaction on 20 meters can be expected if the wires are
parallel and closely spaced and tuning it on 20 will drive one crazy,
however 40 meters will not suffer much de-tuning. Been there, done that.
