I agree that an indoor dipole is a also a great way to start. When I
got back on the air last summer after a couple of decades absence, my
first antenna was a dipole that started inside the peak of the roof at
the front  of he house, ran through the house and out a window to my
garage. It worked quite well.

The virtues of open wire feeders are vastly over-rated. 1/4" coax,
whether RG8X or RG59, has a lot less loss than is generally believed
unless the VSWR is extremely high. Look at the data and see the curves
in the ARRL Antenna Book for loss with VSWR as compared with matched
loss.
