Hopefully not going TOO far off the topic here, that's a reason I am a
strong supporter to the ARRL for a bandplan that separates the modes.
In the distant past when I ran RTTY with a machine that rattled the whole
house and spewed out long strips of paper, EVERY RTTY operator knew CW as
well as any of us. They listened and "QRL?" in CW before CQ-ing in RTTY and
they signed in CW so we knew exactly who each other was.
Nowadays, fewer and fewer RTTY (and other mode) ops know CW. When we can't
understand what the other person is saying, it's hard to remember that
he/she has as much right there as we do. Besides, if the RTTY op doesn't
know CW, how is he/she going to understand "QRL PSE QSY" from a CW QSO in
progress or even ask "QRL?" if the frequency seems clear?
It didn't help that that was (I believe) a RTTY contest weekend. Contests
bring out the worst in some ops <G>.
