[Elecraft] K1 display alternatives?

The KX1 display leaves this K1 owner envious. Has anyone put an LED display
into their K1? Is it even possible (aside from the considerable nuisance it
would be to remove the LCD display), or would there be an MCU conflict of
some sort?

I've saved ideas for LED illumination of the LCD, but I'd still prefer
glowing digits to my hard-to-see liquid crystal. I'd happily commit the 1 or
2 mA the KX1 display requires.
