Dave,
Actually the CW filter is a continuously variable filter that is optimized
for bandwidths in the range of 500 Hz. From this continuous bandwidth, you
select 4 fixed setting for operation (yes, you chose) - you do that during
the process of filter setup using the menu.
After you have chosen your 4 filter widths and set the BFO frequency
relating to that filter width, you can cycle through these 4 settings with
the XFIL button on the front panel. I set my CW filters at 1.2 kHz, 700 Hz,
400 Hz, an 150 Hz (actually they are a bit more narrow than that, but these
are the setup numbers). I usually operate with the 700 Hz filter and switch
to the narrower ones when the going gets tough.
If you are contemplating SSB, the SSB option has its own filter with a width
of around 2.0 kHz. This is a fixed width filter, but it can be modified for
slightly differnt widths by using different value capacitors. John
Grebenkemper KI6WX has worked out the cap values for a 1.9, 2.2 and 2.5 kHz
wide SSB filter - I like the 2.2 width myself.
I am certain you will enjoy the K2. As the reports show, it has one of the
very best receiver front ends available in ham transceivers - it sure
listens good.

First may I say the ARRL did a superb job reviewing the K2-100. At first I
was a little confused about the kit pricing until I went to the elecraft web
page. My first question is if I read the review correctly the K2 was a
selectable CW filter? and I assume for about $900.0 I get theK2 and the
kpa100. So the next thing I would ask I really want a radio to be proud of
a something that is a part of my accomplishment. or compare this to the
Drake TR-7
Thank You Dave M w8ixy hopefully looking forward to joining the elecraft
family
