In all my years of Ham radio .... which I guess aren't many compared to
some; but are a lot compared to others ... I have never relied on any S
meter for RST.  I know it's subjective to some degree; but I've often
given guys 569 or 579 when the needle sometimes fails to budge.  In the
end, I agree that you have to rely on the "grey" S meter between the
ears!
