Congratulations! It's a FUN radio to play with!=20
Hopefully, you will find the assembly instructions complete and
self-explanatory..... <G>.
Some builders have found that they get a short between the tab on the =
power
amplifier transistor and ground when attaching the front cover. That tab =
is
at B+ so a short is not good! It seems to be that, in some kits, the =
beveled
"bottom side" of a flat head screw that secures the front cover (which =
is
the "heat sink") to the transistor and standoff is able to "reach" =
through
the hole past the insulating thermal gasket and touch the tab on the
transistor to produce the short. IF you have this problem, look there. =
The
solution depends upon the builder. Some simply reposition the screw =
slightly
and some go to a flat-bottomed (pan-head) screw. It seems to happen to =
only
a few builders. I've assembled and disassembled KX1 0004 dozens of times
without any problem, so I'm not quite sure why it plagues some builders, =
but
it does turn up now and again.=20
Don't know about those hot "torroid" coils, but the toroids needed in =
the
rig are pretty easy to wind (Doncha' love spell chekkers?).

-----Original Message-----
I finally scraped up enough to buy a proper Elecraft rig and not just a
mini-module kit.
I am excited and waiting patiently for it to arrive, but sadly I will =
not
likely be able to start right when I get it because of personal
responsabilities.
But what I want to know is, aside from information detailed in the
instruction manual, does anyone have any suggestions or warnings about
construction and/or operation?
If your suggest is to pay for pre-wound torroids, thank you, but I'll be
winding them myself.
Thank You
