For what (little) it may be worth, when I suspect a demaged mic cable (and 
I've had more than my share of them over the years), I've found that I can 
usually locate the point of the break by HOLDING one end of the cable 
perfectly steady while moving the other end back and forth, or in/out. If 
that end does not demonstrate a problem, I'll hold IT steady and move the 
other end. Then, once I find which end of the cable is the culprit. I can 
usually pull on the wire (not the insulation) and pull it right out of its 
insulation. Once I have the broken wire in hand, I can lay it up against 
the other wires to 'measure' precisely where the break occurred.
