I seem to have the opposite problem with my K2.  Even though I have done the
Rev. B mods incl. the volume control mod., I can still hear strong  signals
in my headphones with the control all the way counterclockwise.  But quite
weak. I normally leave the volume control in the 9 oclock position and use
the RF gain control if things get too loud.  I like to operate with the AGC
off.  This keeps the background noise level down during no signal intervals.

The Heil MH2 has two elements a dynamic with the wires cut off and a
$2 panasonic electret. This is not unusual to use these electret
capsules a highly touted studio mic used them which cost several
hundred dollars.
