Fellow Elecrafters,

My K1 sn# 1647 is alive and well! Got finished with the transmitter =
section alignment last night and got it on the air tonight. Had a QSO =
with Garry, WA1GWH in upstate NY. He was running 1 watt from a Heathkit =
HW-40 to a random wire. I was running the K1 at 4 watts to my G5RV. We =
both received 599 reports from each other. Garry then reduced output to =
250mW and went down to a 559 and the reduced again down to 100 mW where =
he was a 339 - 349 at best. He "zoomed" back up to "high power" (1W) =
where we finished the QSO.

The K1 went together like a dream and I only had one minor problem. =
Upon finishing the kit, the speaker wasn't working. The headphones were =
fine, but the speaker had nil output. First, I determined that there =
was NOT a short in the headphone jack that would have muted the speaker =
even when the cans were unplugged. Then I did a little schematic tracing =
and saw that the speaker pin #1 wasn't making it, continuity wise, back =
past the headphone socket. Those headphone socket pins were so short! =
I melted more solder in there to improve the connection; but no joy. I =
must have slightly bent a pin or something. Anyway, the next pad over =
was where the connection was supposed to go - so a little jumper made =
from a piece of excess component lead was called into service and did =
the trick! Everything is working as per Hoyle; and I couldn't be =
happier! Thanks to all the folks at Elecraft for producing such a =
superb product!
