Usually, grounding crystals at the bottom (actually nearest the ground plane
of the board) results in a lower impedance ground for the crystal cans and
produces a better shape filter.
That being said, I do recall a few folks have tried it on the KSB2 crystals
(not me) and reported little noticable difference.  It does make a
difference on the RF board.
