Tim,
Well, I enter a lot of contests...and have run SS CW and SSB since 1972. I run a lot of multi-op using a variety of rigs. I also have a IC756PROII and have contested on the 1000MP, IC756, TS850S, etc.
To me, the only rig that could touch the K2 is the IC756. Yep, an early 90s rig. I contest a lot with the IC756PROII and it is good. Now, I love CW so I want to talk to you in that vain. The filters are wonderfull. But....now we get into preferences and feelings.
I entered the NAQP CW contest using the IC756PROII. I got bored and decided to crank up the K2\100 on CW running 100 watts. Result? Well, I made just as many Q's per hour...ran on single frequency...and had less of a headache. The conclusion was that the IC756PROII produces more highs in the headphones and has more of a tinny sound to it. While, the K2 sounds like the IC756 which is a sweet radio with great audio. The k2 was much more pleasant to operate as you have CW pounding into your ears. I did not feel I needed a bandpass tunner, the filters work superbly. I rarely use the BPT on any of the rigs I've owned maining because I have trained myself to have one in my brain.
I use a 400 Hz bandpass and use the RIT quite a bit
The K2 is awesome for contesting. It is my rig of choice, but since I contest with a bunch of other guys, they do not see it that way and think it is a toy. This November, look for K0WA or AB0S or K0BJ or W0NO on CW. I am bringing the K2 and I have forcing them to play with it.
On SSB, the rig again holds its own...and...again...the audio is a lot sweeter than any of the rigs I have mentioned.
