John,
Go for the K2, you will not be disappointed. Yes, it is a bigger kit than
the K1, but no harder to build - just takes a bit longer because there are
more parts.
With the K2, you get the capability to expand it - with SSB, DSP, KPA100,
KIO2. While the K1 is expandable too, it is more limited - it is a CW only
transceiver, and is not adaptable to an internal amplifier. OTOH, if you
really want a portable transceiver that performs well, you can't go wrong
with a K1 either.

Oh yes, you asked about the internal tuners - the K2 tuner has more range
than the K1 tuner, but both do a fantastic job with a wide range of
antennas.

| I am trying to figure out what Elecraft model to buy and build for the
| first time.
|
| I have as yet only built a small SLA battery charger from
| www.hfprojects.com
| and have the QRP amp from the same group waiting to be built.
|
| I must say I have been bitten by the kit bug. It is a rather nice
| feeling
| When you have finished assembling something like that yourself instead
| of just buying it ready made. :)
|
| My question is, which would be recommended to build a K1-2, K1-4
| Or just go for the gusto and get the K2.
|
| I am just trying out my fist at CW and right now sounds more
| Like a 2 year old with a set big building blocks.
| So the K1s are an intriguing idea.
|
| And my second question
|
| How well would the K1 or K2's internal tuners tune something like the
| Whip antenna off say a PRC-104 Military Manpack. (this is more aimed at
| The K2 when I finally get one, hihi)
|
| All opinions will be greatly appreciated.
