Hi
If 100 watts is all you want then the KPA100 is a better choice. The way =
the KPA100 is integrated into the K2 will make operating much nicer. The =
K2/100 will use much less power and create much less heat. With only 10 =
watts of drive the K2 would most likely only give you 100-200 watts out =
of the linear. You may want to consider mounting the KPA100 externally =
into an EC-2 box with the KAT100 tuner for shack use then the K2 can be =
used portable with the KAT2 and internal battery. I have built several =
this way and it works very well

Subject: [Elecraft] KPA-100 or "Budget" External Linear?
Hello all. If, when I'm on the road, the stock K2=20
will "work" FB for me, but when I'm at home, I=20
want the option of a bit more power, what are the=20
pros and cons of installing the KPA-100 versus=20
just hooking up my K2 to a linear amplfier? =20
I am considering ordering the KPA-100 as my K2=20
nears completion, but noting that a linear amp=20
such as an Ameritron al800 can be had (used) for=20
a couple of hundred dollars more than the price=20
of a KPA-100, I'm wondering if the external amp=20
might be a better choice for me.=20
I should note that having more than 100 watts out=20
is mostly "bonus" for me; if matching the K2 to=20
the linear and, especially, tuning the=20
combination during normal, day-to-day operation,=20
is would be a signficant hasstle, I'd probably=20
prefer to go witht he KPA-100 and the Elecraft=20
external antenna tuner.
Thanks group,
Paul
