As noted by others, fluctuations in output power can result in over driving
amps, especially those using some of more recent higher gain tubes.
Maybe the problem is that it changes power on its own, or is allowed
to fluctuate too far on ALC - I set the output power to the right level to
drive an amp & without touching anything, the K2 wanders up & the
unhappy light goes on the amp. It later wanders down & back again.
Since after a band change the rig ramps up power from very little on the
first transmission, what the power level control says & what the rig does
are two different things & I'm assuming the fluctuation is the result of
going too far - so reducing step size would reduce amount of over drive,
as I imagine power level stability wasn't really much of a design criteria
& might not be possible to tighten up.
On the other hand, with two active hams 250m away & another 500m
away - we all work CW - between key shaping & occasionally over
driving the amp, the K2 does a pretty good job keeping them away
when I'm on. ;^(
