I want to thank everyone who helped me with suggestions when I had trouble
with low receive on "Alignment Part II" . . . and I tried several
suggestions and finally contacted Gary at Elecraft and he suggested just
going ahead and finishing the K2 and see what happens at that point.
Well, I believe in taking it like a man . . . and blame Elecraft for the
problem (hey, gotta blame somebody hahahahaha)
Here's what happened. When I inventoried the K2, there was a connector
missing, which is one of those which connects the control board to the RF
board. So, I contacted Elecraft and they sent me one. In the meantime, I
built the K2 up to that point, then, with time on my hands, decided to go
ahead and pre-wind some toroids, putting them into coin envelopes for future
use.
Well, I got the connector, and got everything hooked up for the first 40m
alignment . . and that's when I had the problem. Since I took Gary's advice
and went ahead and built the rest of it, I discovered I had an envelope that
I'd marked RFC11 and that (here's the problem) I CHECKED IT OFF AS BEING
INSTALLED in the manual. So, if you look at the schematic, RFC11 is also
the 12V connection to the 2n5109 post mixer amplifier - no wonder I had low
receive!!!! So, completed the K2 today, everything is up and running at
full power and full receive . . . but y'see, if that connector had been in
there, I would have done everything in order and wouldn't have had the
problem . . . well, hey, I tried . . . I guess I could take a little of the
blame <grin>
Now, that I've tested it out, it's playing around while I finish the KPA100
and the SSB board and Noise Blanker . . . and what a great radio it is . . .
