We weren't allowed sending sidetone in the commercial exams we did.
Neither were we allowed anything but a straight key and a pencil. I
was so nervous that I failed the first time. Fortunately the examiner
was allowed to give you a retest if he thought you were marginal. He
took me to one side, told me he was retesting me that afternoon and
suggested I spend some time in the pub at lunchtime. I passed my
retest with flying colours :-)
