In the NY office, the straight keys appeared to be welded solid with 
about a 1/2" gap.  When I took my extra test in 1960, I brought in a 
large, homebrew keyer.  After the examiner had heard enough, he sneaked 
up behind me and yanked the plug.  Scared the living **** out of me.
