I ought to mention that all the ships I sailed on had separate rx and
tx antennae and I was told by my first boss (a man who served as an RO
on the Russian convoys) never never never use AGC on CW :-)

RDEC> I remember seeing pictures of those keys, but never saw one in Amateur
RDEC> operations. I suspect that was because everyone was used to the fairly long
RDEC> delay for the change-over. Well, not EVERYONE... There were groups of ops
RDEC> who did work QSK, but they tended to be exclusive little groups since most
RDEC> ops couldn't. Maybe some of them used the same mechansim.

RDEC> The oldest shipboard consoles I worked with dated from the late 60's, and
RDEC> they were using relay switching.

RDEC> I don't recall that we could in any way hear "between the dits" with those
RDEC> mechanical relays. After all, if the other station sends a couple of dits
RDEC> you're going to hear it between characters anyway.

RDEC> When I needed to break the transmission I just tapped the key between
RDEC> characters. But my experience is mostly on commercial circuits and the range
RDEC> of operator skills was at least as great as we find on the Ham bands.

RDEC> As I said in an earlier msg, ships had separate rxs and txs and most of the
RDEC> muting that I saw was done off the back contacts of the key. As soon as it
RDEC> lifted it muted all the (HF) rxs in the shack (usually 2, sometimes up to 4)
RDEC> and muted the ship's communal aerial system. It was all relay driven so
RDEC> there was full QSK. It was quite important that you could hear between the
RDEC> dits if you were working one of the busy CRSs as they didn't take kindly
RDEC> having to hang around waiting for you when they might have QRYs of 30-40
RDEC> ships.

RDEC> cheers
