I remember seeing pictures of those keys, but never saw one in Amateur
operations. I suspect that was because everyone was used to the fairly =
long
delay for the change-over. Well, not EVERYONE... There were groups of =
ops
who did work QSK, but they tended to be exclusive little groups since =
most
ops couldn't. Maybe some of them used the same mechansim.=20
The oldest shipboard consoles I worked with dated from the late 60's, =
and
they were using relay switching.=20
I don't recall that we could in any way hear "between the dits" with =
those
mechanical relays. After all, if the other station sends a couple of =
dits
you're going to hear it between characters anyway.=20
When I needed to break the transmission I just tapped the key between
characters. But my experience is mostly on commercial circuits and the =
range
of operator skills was at least as great as we find on the Ham bands.=20

As I said in an earlier msg, ships had separate rxs and txs and most of =
the
muting that I saw was done off the back contacts of the key. As soon as =
it
lifted it muted all the (HF) rxs in the shack (usually 2, sometimes up =
to 4)
and muted the ship's communal aerial system. It was all relay driven so
there was full QSK. It was quite important that you could hear between =
the
dits if you were working one of the busy CRSs as they didn't take kindly
having to hang around waiting for you when they might have QRYs of 30-40
ships.
cheers
