The 'peak' for L34 is very broad, and the proper tuning point will be with
the slug 1 to 1 1/2 turns in from the top.

Actually, if you can discern the proper point with your ear, a better
adjustment is for the best signal to noise ratio rather than just the peak.
Tune in the 7.000 birdie (with no antenna connected), and set the filter
width to something moderate to narrow (like 400 to 600 Hz).  Then with
headphones on, try to see if you can find a setting where the noise is at
its minimum while the signal is still at (or very near) its peak.  This
point is still not extremely sharp, but it is not as broad as simply tuning
for a peak.
