Thanks to Don and David for their input.  I've solved the puzzle but I'm
more confused than ever.  I've set the filters several times with no
problems and did the cal pll after the last firmware upgrade but some time
after that I apparently removed and reinstalled the plug from the counter
probe, although I sure don't remember doing it -- you can guess the rest of
the story.  Anyhow, after swapping the leads everything works as advertised.
It's hell to get old.
