Subject: K2/100 and Astron supplies
Just finished the KPA-100 kit, added to a K2 that I acquired in a trade. I
updated the K2 to Rev B, with all the known upgrades. I've been powering
the K2 prior to the upgrade from my station 12 VDC supply, an Alinco
DM-330MV switching supply. With that supply, everything works perfectly.
When I installed the K2/100 on the desk, I added a new Astron RS-35M supply.
As soon as I powered up the rig with that supply, I noted a slightly rough
note on received CW signals, and it was noticeable on SSB as well. I was
sure that it was a defective-out-of-the-box Astron, so I substituted an
Astron RS-20M supply I had on the workbench. Oddly enough, I have exactly
the same rough note with the RS-20M as the RS-35M. I haven't looked at the
supply output with a scope yet, but this is pretty strange. At this point,
I remembered that the K2 manual recommended not locating the rig within 18
inches of the power supply. I moved the K2 another 9-12 inches away from
the supply, and the problem disappeared. I wonder if anyone has looked hard
into the K2 to see if this is a solvable problem?
