I took the airline headphones I had on my KX1 and am sending them to my
daughter with a new laptop on Monday to Baghdad so she doesn't have to =
wait
in line to get to a computer to email or chat with me. (yes she's in =
the
Army National Guard, been there 6 months and has another 6 to go on her =
tour
of duty, God Bless her!).
I was buying the laptop for her today at Circuit City and found some =
Sony
MDR-E829V earbuds for 14.99. The specs are Open Air, Dynamic, capable =
of
handling 50mW at 16 ohms at 1kHz. Sensitivity is 108dB/mW. Plugged =
them
into the KX1 and had to turn the volume down to about 30% of full =
rotation
of the pot. Talk about a lot of sound. So you've spent the bucks and =
big
time building the KX1, now go out and spend 15 bucks on some nice =
earbuds,
they also come with their own carrying case....pretty cool.
This stuff Rocks...Live on Elecraft and the Aptos, California =
engineering
team.
Now to talk my wife into buying me the transverters for the K2 for =
Christmas
and my birthday.

Wayne did recommend using some of the more sensitive e-a-r-b-u-d-s with =
it.
Here's what Wayne had to say to a question about audio levels from =
another
operator some weeks ago:
"The KX1 is optimized for low current drain and will have less audio =
than
the K1 or K2. But you should have plenty of audio, especially with
headphones, unless you're using really inefficient ones. E-a-r-b-u-d-s =
are
ideal (the latest ones from Sony are about $15-19 and are very =
comfortable),
typically requiring an AF GAIN setting of 9-10 o'clock. Also make sure =
you
have installed the shorting jumper across pins 1 and 3 of J7. Finally, =
the
crystal filter has somewhat greater loss at low bandwidth settings. Even =
for
CW use, I typically keep it between 12 o'clock and max unless there's =
QRM
nearby."

Phil and all,
I've operated KX1 #58 in some pretty high ambient noise (high wind) and =
I=20
found the audio adequate with e-a-r-b-u-d-s.
