I hooked up a 13.8 volt supply this morning and remeasured some power
outputs of my KX1 (which now has 33 ohm R30):
Meter: Daiwa CN410M
Dummy Load: Tempo 50 watt
Meter: Fluke handheld, current measured on 10A range (10ma resolution)
External 13.8V 7A Astron:
receive: approx 0.04a
7mhz 3.0W 650ma
10 3.9 680
14 3.5 680
Internal Lithiums (little used):
7mhz 1.0W
10 1.4
14 1.1
External 8-AA pack, slightly used Kirkland AA batteries:
7mhz 2.4W
10 3.2
14 2.8
External 12.7v 17ah SLA:
7mhz 2.8W
10 3.9
14 3.0
It might be better if the KX1 Specifications indicated 13.8 volts instead
of 12 volts, there would be less confusion.
I don't know the accuracy of the Daiwa for certain. It has a 15 watt range
with good needle deflection for 1 watt.
If anyone knows a good place to get Bird 43 slugs for QRP HF let me know.
In any case carrying an 8AA case with alkalines (or 10AA with nimh) is
about 3db of gain, if these measurements are close.
Now I've got all the internal options, so hopefully I can stop taking the
thing apart and use this little gem. Really a nice package.
I store and transport my KX1 in a "Spacemaker" box from Staples. 8.5" x 2.5
x 5.5 outside size, very light (under 5 oz). This case provides moderate
protection, good for briefcase or suitcase. Enough room for KX1 wrapped in
bubble wrap, earbuds, KX1 paddles, antenna wire, 8-AA external power pack,
ARRL minilog, and a pen. Not the smallest case, but at under 5 ounces
weight and cost only a couple of dollars, (as I recall) it gives good
protection. I use a double thickness of bubble wrap around the KX1 itself
as it is very light and keeps things from moving about in the case.
Enjoy!
