I had some work to do, so I brought the KX1 up to the dining room table with
the intention of doing some SWL'ing while I worked. I connected a 42-foot
wire to the antenna post which went through the kitchen, above the door to
the outside deck, and then tied to a deck chair. I did not use a
counterpoise this time. Just for the heck of it, I tuned up on 20m and got
an acceptable match. I ended up working France and Canada, all with the
internal batteries. The highest point of the antenna was above the door. I
probably could have worked more stations, but the band changed a bit so I
decided to SWL instead. I found strong signals from WBCQ, WWCR, VOA, and the
BBC. It was very enjoyable, and even music sounded OK when properly tuned
in. (I have not done the resistor change yet so my power output is a bit on
the low side).
I have found myself trying to send CW while in the USB or LSB mode,
especially after doing some SWL'ing. I'll have to use the 3 memories per
band that remember the mode.
Great fun!
