I suspect that an examination of the mailman source code (it is open
source under the GNU license) would be educational here, although it
probably wouldn't be very straightforward.
Something to look into when the bands go completely dead :^)
My point is that not all software will be 100% compliant with the RFCs
(or there might not be a uniform understanding among programmers as to
what the RFC requires).
I had set up my mailserver (Exim) to deliver messages directly rather
than going through my ISP, but found that often the mail would bounce,
usually without enough information to give any clues. Finally I saw
one header that indicated what I was sending with the HELO command, but
I can't figure out what needs to be configured to change it to my FQDN.
It was easier to just relay via the ISP until I get a chance to look
into this further.
